With Nine Place Winners Sultana Claims The Raul Huerta Memorial Tournament
MORENO VALLEY, CA - One of the most successful wrestling programs in the high desert were victorious over the weekend in claiming the 42-team tournament with five place winners and four individual champions.
The Sultans won the event with 209.5 points over Arizona state power Ironwood Ridge who finished in second place with 202 points. Coming in third was Palm Desert with 177, followed by Hillcrest 169, and Citrus Hills with 158 to round up the top five teams in the tournament.
Ryan Spangler (132) won the outstanding wrestler award in the lower weights as he scored four pins in the tournament. In the finals of his weight class, Spangler pinned Arizona state medalist Tyler Rokop (Ironwood Ridge) in 3:59 to win the match.
Teammate Noah Cortez (138) followed up with an individual title of his own by defeating Brent Ward (Ironwood Ridge) 9-5 in the finals.
Brandon Bollinger (145) won the third individual title for the Sultans as he upended Nico Noriega (Palm Desert) in a tight 6-4 match. Bollinger was the # 2 seed in the event and had two pins and a major decision in the tournament.
The final winner of the night for the Sultans was Ethan Perez (285). Perez won a close 5-4 match over masters meet qualifier and the # 1 seed Ethen Ericksen of Carter.
Other place winners for the Sultans included Davis Franco (113), Kris Espinoza (152), Ethan Aguiniga (160), Javier Hernandez (170), and Nate Carreon at 195.
